Thing that made it a cult-object for collectors today, with skyrocketing prices way beyond measure. Highly regarded in the past for its performance and capabilities, only 800 copies were made of it, it seems, because - rumors say - back at the time Fuji was not that much known as a lens maker and they had no camera in production to mount it to, so they did not take the challenge to producing more. I would add also the original HEXANON 60mm f1.2. Somebody even call it one of the 'four kings' (!!!), the ultra-large aperture lenses of the hey-days of the Japanese lens development: ZUNOW 5cm f1.1, CANON 50mm F0.95 and the NIKKOR 50mm F1.1. Released in 1954, in recent years it has achieved a sort of legendary status. I noticed I never posted an image of the lens, but only the test shots. I'm deliberately defocusing here with an eye toward abstract art, and look forward to posting more photos taken with it.

Worth noting, the lens focuses perfectly well. Some people may find the triangles distracting, but I like it, and Kubrick chose to use the Zeiss stopped down, where he could have used the lens wide open and had circular bokeh. I may create a blog about how I did this, as the improvement from f1.2 and against my Canon fd 50mm f1.4 with regards to sharpness, aberrations, optical vignetting, bokeh and transition is quite something. I'd previously removed the aperture blades and used the lens in some early shots as a fixed f1.2 to nice effect, though decided to add a fixed reuleaux triangle aperture to emulate the look of the early Zeiss b-speed cine lenses used by Stanley Kubrick.

This is a lens I bought cheaply due to a damaged and non-working aperture. Nothing physical is eternal.Ĭanon fd 50mm f1.2L f1.5 (Zeiss b-speed mod) To imagine what might have been, in the space between reality and dreams.
